10 Year Reunion10-YEAR REUNION

If you have a history with RVTS, clear your calendar! We're planning our 10-year reunion for 19-20 June. Alumni and those closely involved with the program (both PRVTS and RVTS) will be invited to a weekend reunion to celebrate 10 years of operation. There will be both social and educational components. The venue is to be finalised; stay tuned for details.

Practice Manager's WorkshopPRACTICE MANAGER’S WORKSHOP

A new innovation for 2010, RVTS is trialling a practice managers’ workshop 21–23 May (2010 cohort only). The concept is simple: Bring practice managers together to explain the program and how they can assist with administration. The goal: to free up registrars so they have more time to study.

10,000 steps10,000 STEPS

The 2010 cohort and their supervisors have stepped up their efforts at self-care. Armed with a pedometer and daily log sheet, they are attempting to accumulate 3.8 million steps and travel the equivalent of 3040km, the distance from Port Douglas to Hobart. Which team will log the most steps and claim the prize?

Sydney Workshop1ST BONDI WORKSHOP

The 2010 cohort enjoyed our first workshop for 2010 at Bondi Beach. The lungs were kept pumping at the St Vincent Airway Skills Centre, it was an eye-for-an-eye during Ophthalmology, and the hearts were racing during aggression management. The families stepped out to the Sydney Aquarium, Darling Harbour and Wildlife World. The 2008 and 2009 cohorts get their turn 19-23 April.

At the CoalFace

Doris Berger, Workshop Coordinator, Albury NSW

Doris BergerWorkshops are a big part of the RVTS experience and renowned for their professionalism, friendliness and fun. Such a reputation doesn't come by accident. Each workshop takes our dedicated team of medical educators and admin staff around three months to plan and prepare. At the eye of the hurricane is Doris Berger, Workshop Coordinator based in the Albury office.

Doris joined RVTS in 2003, back when there were only a handful of registrars, and has since worn a variety of hats, including teletutorial scheduling and clinical teaching visit coordination. After a stint assisting with workshops, she took over the coordination role in the second half of 2009. Last year's Brisbane workshop was her baptism by fire with 42 registrars attending. "There were around 130 people at the Friday night dinner," she says, "the biggest yet."

Long before the workshop kicks off, Doris is kept busy working with the medical educators to develop the program, arrange a venue, book flights, organise social functions and assemble educational material. "It's like completing a giant jigsaw puzzle," she says, "with all the pieces ultimately coming together."

And things don't let up at the workshop. Doris can often be spotted buzzing about the place with a fire extinguisher, putting out small blazes before anyone smells smoke. Hunting down registrars that are late for a session is a speciality; she will find you!

Each workshop presents its own unique set of challenges for the workshop team. "Keeping the family feel past registrars rave about is one of the team's biggest priorities and challenges as RVTS grows," she says. Future improvements include more streamlined information delivery, plus a range of new teaching resources to assist with skills sessions.
