Everything you need to know before submitting your application with RVTS.
Eligibility Criteria
RVTS has two streams of trainees:
- The Remote Stream for doctors working in rural & remote Australia
- The AMS Stream, providing training for doctors working in Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services
Eligibility criteria for each stream is as follows:
Location
Remote Stream
- The location must be in Modified Monash Model MMM 4, 5, 6, or 7 (see the Health Workforce Locator) AND
- The position must be providing continuing comprehensive whole-patient medical care to individuals, families and their communities.
AMS Stream
- The location must be an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service AND must be in Modified Monash Model MMM 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 (see the Health Workforce Locator); AND
- The position must be providing continuing comprehensive whole-patient medical care to individuals, families and their communities.
Practice status
- The position provides continuing comprehensive whole-patient medical care to individuals, families and their communities.
Medical registration
- Doctors must have General, Provisional or Limited Registration for Area of Need with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). AND
- The doctor must be at Medical Board of Australia Level 3 or 4 supervision. Levels 1 and 2 are not eligible for the RVTS Training Program
For doctors with limited registration
- The doctor must be on the Australian Medical Council Standard Pathway and have successfully completed Australian Medical Council part 1 exam; AND
- Limited registration must have first been granted on or after 2 January 2023
Additional information about both streams
- The doctor must be working in an eligible location at the time of applying, and remain in that location throughout their training
- Applications are accepted from Australian citizens, permanent residents and temporary residents
- Preference for both streams will be given to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors
Please note: RVTS does NOT provide a list of eligible locations. It is up to an applicant to determine suitability of their location. RVTS will determine the eligibility once an application is received.

- Curriculum Vitae
- A letter of support from current practice, dated and signed by the Practice Principal, Senior Medical Director, CEO, Director, or Practice Manager Download a Practice Letter Template here
- Be on practice letterhead
- State the specific date and duration of employment including the end date of current contract. If contract is ongoing (and has no end date) this needs to be indicated in the letter
- State whether work is full time or part time and total number of face to face, rostered, patient consultation hours and which days are worked each week
- State the nature of work including all duties performed
- A passport-sized photo
- Evidence of Australian or New Zealand citizenship or Australian permanent or temporary residency (e.g. certified copy of birth certificate if Australian or New Zealand born, or citizenship certificate or passport) If applicable, evidence of the date when the applicant became or applied for permanent residency (e.g. letter from Department of Immigration and Citizenship, or photocopy of Australian permanent residency status in passport). Please ensure that the date of permanent residency or application can be seen clearly
- Evidence of name change if applicant’s name appears differently in supporting documents (e.g. marriage certificate or deed poll)
Additional documents if applicable
- Sworn Statutory Declaration of intention to resign from AGPT or ACRRM Independent pathway or RACGP Practice Experience pathway if selected into the RVTS program
- If working in a solo doctor town, a statement from the relevant Rural Workforce Agency or Primary Health Network verifying that it is a solo doctor town
- Evidence of pass in AMC Part 1 exam or certified copy of Advanced Standing Certificate Evidence of the date of first medical registration in an Australian state or territory (eg certificate or letter from AHPRA) (including New Zealand trained doctors)
- Evidence of Level 3 or 4 Supervision
- Evidence of Aboriginality
We have a young family and we are both doing training - the flexibility that the RVTS program offered us is the most appealing part of it. It has been excellent that we have been able to stay in the same place while we study.
Frequently asked questions

The Remote Vocational Training Scheme is similar to the Australian General Practice Training Program (AGPT) in that it provides vocational training towards Fellowship of both ACRRM and RACGP. Doctors training with RVTS are able to access Medicare’s A1 rebates.
Doctors who under their current arrangements would be unable to train with the AGPT may be able to train through RVTS under distance supervision arrangements. Click to view information about training with RVTS.

Doctors must already be working in an eligible location to apply for training with RVTS. There is no requirement for a doctor to move from that location to undertake their training. Doctors training with RVTS must continue to work in an eligible location for the majority of their training. Advanced skills training (eg anaesthetics, obstetrics and surgery etc) may require a doctor to move to a regional centre for 12 months to gain appropriate training within a teaching hospital.

RVTS does not place registrars. Doctors must already be working in an eligible location to apply for training with RVTS.

RVTS does not provide a list of eligible locations. It is up to an applicant to determine their elibility to apply for the program. Full details of eligibility for each stream are available on the Eligibility Criteria page.

The Remote Vocational Training Scheme provides vocational training towards Fellowship of both ACRRM and RACGP.

Training with RVTS is funded by the Commonwealth. It is limited to an intake of 22 doctors per year into the Remote Stream, and 10 doctors per year into the AMS Stream.

The Remote Vocational Training Scheme provides vocational training towards Fellowship of both ACRRM and RACGP. Doctors can apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL) to either or both Colleges. RPL applications are submitted to RVTS for review prior to RVTS submitting the application to the relevant College.

The RVTS is a three to four year training program. Fellowship of RACGP requires 3 years of full time training. Fellowship of ACRRM requires 4 years of full time training. Recognition of prior learning is determined on an individual basis and may shorten training time.

Registrars can apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for previous work activities deemed to be equivalent to certain components of each college’s training requirements.

Applications are submitted through RVTS however the Registrar is responsible for compiling the application. Applications for RPL must be completed within 6 months of commencement of training.
